The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency on Thursday reported 1,113 new cases of coronavirus and 51 more deaths from the pandemic disease.

Out of 21,356 test results received in the past day, 5.2% were positive, and the 14-day rolling average of positive tests ticked down to 6.4%.

Daily cases and new hospitalizations have declined significantly in recent weeks. As recently as mid January, the rolling average of positive tests was near 15%.

Total COVID-19 hospitalizations stood at 945 with 306 patients needing intensive care. There are currently 46 open and staffed ICU beds across the county. In mid January, over 1,800 COVID patients were hospitalized, with over 400 in the ICU.

“The overall trends are generally positive,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher at the county’s weekly briefing on the pandemic. “We are hopeful that people continue to understand the actions that brought our case counts down are the actions we need to continue.”

Since the first local case last March, there have been 249,975 cases in San Diego County and 2,955 deaths.
