San Diego County public health officials reported 968 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 54 more deaths from the pandemic disease.
It was the second day with fewer than 1,000 new cases — a level not seen since before the big surge began in November.
“We need these numbers to continue to come down,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher at the county’s weekly press briefing on the pandemic. But he added that “things right now are headed in the right direction.”
Out of 19,794 test results received in the past day, 4.9% were positive, and the 14-day rolling average of positive cases continued its downward trend, reaching 7.7%.
Since the first local case in March, there have been 241,018 cases of coronavirus and 2,683 deaths.
