Overview: Helix Charter High School begins new school year

The sustainability CTE pathway is starting this year. Additionally, internship classes have been developed to support the growth and development of internships in the Career Technical Education pathways.

While the calendar still says summer, the days are getting a little shorter, vacations are winding down, and kids are having to roll out of bed in the morning to go to school.

Helix Charter High School started classes late last week, and the school’s executive director, Kevin Osborn, is excited about what lies ahead for the La Mesa school.

La Mesa Courier caught up with Osborn recently for an email Q&A.

LMC: How many students will be enrolled at Helix for the 2025-26 school year?

Osborn: Approximately 2,550.

LMC: Any renovations done over the summer that students and staff will notice as they come back in August?

Osborn: Teacher/staff/student workspace, in the library, for teacher collaboration and student study groups.

LMC: Any changes in curriculum for students this school year such as classes added or dropped from the past school year? Any new staff coming aboard this school year?

Osborn: The sustainability CTE pathway is starting this year. Additionally, internship classes have been developed to support the growth and development of internships in the Career Technical Education pathways.

There is also:

  1. Increased number of students and  participating CTE pathways (Biotech, Business, Education, Patient Care, and Sustainability).
  2. We have added approximately five more sections of community college dual enrollment classes.
  3. We are piloting fourth period athletics/physical education classes for a few of our varsity sports. We hope that having some of our varsity athletic programs be part of the school day will reduce facility conflicts after school in an effort to improve practice times and access to our facilities for our junior varsity and novice programs.

LMC: What is your message to Helix parents as their kids go back to school this year?

Osborn: It has been a great start to the 2025-26 school year. We are excited about the continued growth and development of our educational program. Our main purpose will continue to be focused on providing our students with powerful learning experiences, in and out of the classroom, that help them gain the knowledge, skills, and insights that transform their relationship to self, others, and the world.

We look forward to continuing to serve our students and their families with excellence this school year.
