Fleet Science Center has been named the best museum in San Diego Magazine’s annual “Best of San Diego” Awards.
The recognition, based on votes from readers and critics, highlights standout organizations across the region. This year’s awards saw record-breaking participation, with only one vote allowed per category, making the Fleet’s selection especially notable among nine museum nominees.
“This award reflects the passion of our visitors and the dedication of our partners,” the Fleet organization shared. “It’s because of this community that we’re able to advance our mission of connecting everyone in San Diego to the power of science.”
Since opening in 1973, the Fleet Science Center has welcomed more than 26 million guests and become a vital part of the region’s science education landscape. With over 100 hands-on exhibits and Southern California’s only IMAX Dome Theater, the center continues to inspire curiosity and a love for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
While headquartered in Balboa Park, the Fleet’s impact reaches far beyond its walls. Programs like BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering) introduce girls to STEM careers through mentorship and immersive learning. Meanwhile, Fleet on the Go brings interactive exhibits to libraries across the county, making science accessible in every neighborhood.
“The Fleet has grown into a county-wide organization, starting with our home in Balboa Park,” said CEO and President Steve Snyder. “This award reflects the commitment our team brings to making science engaging and available to everyone in the region.”
The recognition comes as the Fleet prepares for an exciting new chapter. Renovations are scheduled to begin this fall as part of the Science Starts Here capital campaign, which aims to enhance exhibits and expand hands-on learning opportunities. The museum will remain open during the improvements and invites guests to witness the changes in real time.
