UC San Diego went on lockdown for about two hours Friday due to a report of an armed person in the vicinity, according to a series of campus alerts.

Administrators put out the all-clear by 1:15 p.m. after initially calling for the lockdown at 11:30 a.m.

The first terse notice on the university’s X account warned, “Possible Armed Suspect. Avoid North Campus. Lock doors and stay inside. UCSD responders on scene.”

The next message, at 11:40 a.m., offered more information, narrowing the affected area to a zone near RIMAC and Liontree Arena, while adding that San Diego police had joined UCSD authorities in the search for the suspect.

Less than an hour later, those on campus were instructed to remain inside, but told the incident was “not currently an active shooter situation.”

At 1:15 p.m., officials told the UCSD community that there was “no ongoing threat to campus” and that a suspect had been contacted off campus.

The individual was being sought for allegedly holding a woman against her will near the La Jolla campus, according to UCSD officials.

The lockdown began because San Diego police had traced the woman’s cellphone to an area near LionTree Arena on campus and informed administrators.
