City officials and community leaders joined for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration at the grand opening of the Pacific Highlands Ranch branch library.
The location, 12911 Pacific Place, is the 37th branch library in the San Diego Public Library system, serving the communities of Pacific Highlands Ranch, Black Mountain Ranch, Torrey Highlands and Del Mar Mesa.
Mayor Todd Gloria attended, along with City Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava.
The $29 million project includes several outdoor reading and gathering spaces. The interior of the 18,000-square-foot building has teen and children’s areas, study and conference rooms, computer areas, a catering kitchen and a large community room for public events.
The facility was planned to be LEED Energy Silver-certified for its smart design and innovative energy conservation.
San Diego-based artist Janelle Iglesias created a site-specific public art installation for the library. “Text/Tile” features terra-cotta tiles that spell out words in English, Spanish, and Kumeyaay, reflecting the languages of people who have inhabited the land where the library is located.
The Pacific Highlands Ranch Library will be open to the public immediately after the ribbon cutting. Residents in the community had been reliant on the nearby Carmel Valley branch, the busiest location in the city’s library system.
