A report of what sounded like a gunshot near an eastern San Diego County primary school prompted a brief lockdown of the campus Friday.

The possible gunfire in the area of Shadow Hills Elementary School on Harbison Canyon Road in Alpine was reported shortly after 10 a.m., according to the county Sheriff’s Department.

“Out of an abundance of caution, school staff immediately initiated a campuswide lockdown,” sheriff’s Capt. Michael Rand said. “Deputies searched (the school), as well as the adjacent Creekside Early Learning Center. They were unable to locate any evidence of a shooting.”

Authorities lifted the lockdown just before 11 a.m., Rand said.
