UC San Diego broke ground Thursday for a building that is the first project in what will become a major entry point to the campus from the new trolley line.
The 74,000-square-foot Design and Innovation Building is a collaborative workspace for students’ entrepreneurial projects. The facility will contain workshops and studios with equipment such as machine tools, 3-D printers and laser cutters to build prototypes.
The building will be adjacent to the new Pepper Canyon Station of the Blue Line trolley extension. Along with a new amphitheater and Pepper Canyon West student housing, the area will act as a public “foyer,” welcoming transit riders to campus.
The new building is expected to be finished in spring of 2021, months prior to when first riders will get to travel on the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley extension.
