A threat issued by a student to several classmates Friday at a Del Sur-area K-8 school prompted an hourlong period of heightened security at the campus while officials tracked down the suspected perpetrator.

The menacing communication directed at students who attend Design 39 Campus in northeastern San Diego came to light shortly before 2 p.m., said Harry Katcher, a spokesman for Poway Unified School District.

The Del Sur Ridge Road school was placed in “secure campus mode” — meaning classroom doors were kept locked and access to the grounds was temporarily restricted — while school officials and police investigated.

As of 2:50 p.m., the student who allegedly issued the threat had been detained for questioning, and the intensified security measures had been lifted, Katcher said.

The nature of the threatening statement was unclear.
