The Southwestern College Governing Board’s three new and returning trustees this week began serving four-year terms.
Re-elected trustees Tim Nader and Nora Vargas and new trustee Leticia Cazares were sworn in prior to the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday. It’s Nader third third term and Vargas’ second term on the board. Both ran unopposed during the Nov. 6 election.
Cazares, a Southwestern College graduate, took 46.7 percent of the vote to capture the board’s fourth seat, defeating Cuyamaca College Dean of Counseling Services Nicole Jones, who finished with 32.8 percent, and businesswoman Tamara Rodriguez, who garnered 20.5 percent of the vote.
“I pledge to lead with courage and do anything I need to do to ensure we are creating a culture where everyone — every student — in our campus community feels safe, heard, valued and respected,” said Cazares, who is also vice president of the board of the American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego and Imperial Counties and a member of the Chula Vista Cultural Arts Commission.
The seven-member Southwestern board appointed trustee Roberto Alcantar to the position of president and Vargas as the board’s vice president.
