An alumnus of the University of San Diego has funded a scholarship to support DACA recipients seeking to become lawyers.
The scholarship is intended for students who were brought to America as children and face an uncertain future and possible deportation because of President Trump’s cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Trial attorney John Gomez donated the initial $35,000 and is hoping other law school graduates and community members will will join the effort.
“I feel compelled as a Christian — and my dad is from Mexico — to offer opportunities to kids that through no fault of their own just didn’t have enough paperwork,” said Gomez.
Law school Assistant Dean Jorge Garcia said private scholarship funding is critical to the DACA student community.
“The existence of scholarships geared to specifically assist DACA students…can be the determining factor in a student’s ability to attend USD School of Law,” he said.
The nationally ranked law school graduates approximately 250 students each year.
