San Diego Unified School District is celebrating a $34 million modernization project at Horace Mann Middle School in San Diego that will see additions and updates to the aging campus.

District leaders and community members are formally announcing the multi-million dollar project Wednesday during a press conference at the school.

The “whole site modernization” project features a new three-story building with 16 classrooms, a health and wellness center, administration spaces, and 32,300-square-feet of added space that will create a new entrance to the school, according to news release from conference organizers.

Other scheduled improvements include a new outdoor dining courtyard, interior improvements, safety improvements including campus-wide fire alarm system upgrades and public address system upgrades, new security lighting and cameras, new visitor parking, as well as a new student drop-off/pick-up driveway, the release continued.

Three existing campus buildings will be demolished, according to the release.

The project is being funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which were local bond measures approved by San Diego voters.

The SDUSD has hired LPA Architects for the project getting underway during the current school year, according to the SDUSD.
