Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, will be the keynote speaker at UC San Diego‘s commencement in June, the university announced Thursday.
The exiled spiritual head and leader of the Tibetan people will address graduating students on June 17. The day before, he will speak at a public event on campus.
“A man of peace, the Dalai Lama promotes global responsibility and service to humanity. These are the ideals we aim to convey and instill in our students and graduates at UC San Diego,” said Chancellor Pradeep Khosla.
The Dalai Lama’s appearances in San Diego will be the first stops on a U.S. tour. He was last in San Diego in 2012.
“This shall be a very special visit. San Diego loves His Holiness. His Holiness will come to San Diego to share an authentic message of peace and human value as the students enter their professional lives,” said Lama Tenzin Dhonden of the San Diego-based Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation.
