Student cooks at six high schools will take part Thursday in the San Diego Unified School District’s 13th annual Teen Iron Chef Competition in Mission Valley.
The event, based on the Food Network television series “Iron Chef America,” will feature Culinary Arts and Management students from Hoover, Garfield, Madison, Mira Mesa, San Diego and Morse high schools.
They’ll be tasked with preparing a three-course meal featuring an ingredient that won’t be revealed until the start. Some of the secret ingredients from previous years include calamari, brie, balsamic vinegar, prosciutto, cantaloupe and tofu.
Judges will include Harris Golden of the San Diego Pretzel Company, Bernard Guillas of The Marine Room, Ken Irvine of Bleu Boheme and Sea 180, Deborah Scott of the Cohn Restaurant Group, Larry Lewis of the San Diego Culinary Institute, Jim Phillips of SYSCO Business Development and Nicole Treadaway of The Art Institute of California-San Diego, which will host the competition beginning at 3:30 p.m.
