Crews will begin tearing down the old Skyline Hills Branch Library on Monday, Aug. 15, to make room for a new, state-of-the-art facility in San Diego.

The library located on 480 S. Meadowbrook Dr. will be removed to make room for a modern, innovative facility that will serve the growing community, city officials said. The old branch, a 4,400-square-foot building constructed in 1969, was closed on Jul. 27 this year. As the construction site is closed to the public, library patrons can pick up or return items at the Paradise Hills Branch Library on 5922 Rancho Hills Dr.

Various libraries across San Diego are being reconstructed into community hubs with educational programs, as part of the City of San Diego’s plan to provide a modern library system. City officials say the new library will be a 15,000-square-foot building on a 3.6 acre lot, located on 7844 Paradise Valley Road.

This new library will offer a host of new features, from an environmental design that uses LEED Silver certification standards, to a multi-purpose area, an outdoor reading patio, children and teens areas and a computer lab. That’s just west of the old building, officials said.

This brand new library is scheduled to open in October 2016. Officials said the entire project has a budget estimated at $13.2 million.
