Dr. James T. Harris III, president of the University of San Diego.

Dr. James T. Harris III, the new president of the University of San Diego, starts work at the Catholic university on Monday.

He’ll greet students, professors and others in the university community at an ice cream social from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Colachis Plaza.

Harris comes to USD from Widener University in Chester, PA, where he served as president for 13 years. The USD board of trustees unanimously selected Harris last February as the institution’s fourth president, succeeding Mary E. Lyons.

“Through his words and actions, Dr. Harris’s distinguished career in academic leadership has reflected the same values that our students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and board members cherish at the University of SanDiego,” said Ron Fowler, chairman of the board of trustees.

Chartered in 1949, USD enrolls approximately 8,300 undergraduate and graduate full-time equivalent students.
