San Diego State University, Cal State San Marcos and the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District are among 82 colleges and universities nationwide recognized Tuesday for their commitment to diversity.
The schools are recipients of Higher Education Excellence in Diversity awards for 2014 from Insight Into Diversity, a publication which focuses on college diversity issues.
It’s the second straight year SDSU made the list.
“We are very proud to be selected as a recipient of the HEED Diversity award,” said Aaron Bruce, SDSU’s chief diversity officer. “Diversity and excellence go hand-in-hand, and this award reflects the ongoing commitment of our campus community to ensure that everyone who sets foot on campus experiences the university as a welcoming and supportive place.”
SDSU, CSUSM and Grossmont-Cuyamaca were honored for initiatives on inclusion, and their broad definitions of diversity to include gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the gay and lesbian community, according to the publication.
CSUSM President Karen Haynes said half the student body at the North County campus self-identifies as a member of some kind of minority group.
“We have been successful at closing the achievement gap because our diversity initiatives help ensure student success and prepare them for a diverse working and civic environment,” Haynes said. “Diversity doesn’t just happen at CSUSM, diversity happens because we develop strategies, craft initiatives and develop partnerships that ensure diversity is part of everything we do.”
Grossmont-Cuyamaca was the only community college district in California to receive the award.
“With our diverse student and campus populations representing San Diego County’s rich mix of cultures and communities, our district places great importance in providing a welcoming environment to everyone,” said Chancellor Cindy L. Miles. “We are delighted that our efforts have been recognized with this welcome award.”
Alliant International University, a private, non-profit institution with campuses across the state, including one in San Diego, also receive an award.
