San Diego-based National University announced Tuesday it received a $9.22 million anonymous donation to support a center that focuses on training nonprofit leaders, teachers and others dedicated to the public good.

The Sanford Education Center is set to open in La Jolla this fall. Philanthropist T. Denny Sanford contributed an initial $1 million toward the center.

“The Sanford Education Center is dedicated to positive change in our communities through the development and support of dynamic nonprofit leaders and inspirational teachers, and others dedicated to the public good,” said National University President and Chancellor Michael Cunningham.

“This transformational gift will leave a legacy for many generations to come through impactful programs that meet 21st century global needs, enabling us to change the world, one graduate at a time,” he said.

The donation — the largest ever received by National University — will cover construction costs and the development of innovative programs for an expected 4,300 participants over the next five years.
