San Diego Police Department homicide detectives continued their investigation Thursday into the deaths of two adults found inside an apartment in Del Cerro.

The investigation began about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, when officers responded to an apartment complex in the 5700 block of College Avenue, following a neighbor’s report of possible gunshots. They checked the area and found nothing suspicious, according to the SDPD.

The response resumed Wednesday about 1:05 p.m., when officers returned to the complex. A relative had asked police to check on a family member who was not responding to phone calls and had missed a scheduled work shift.

After gathering more information at the scene, officers forced entry into the unit and found a 47-year-old woman dead. While searching for other possible victims or a suspect, they encountered a closed bedroom door and believed an armed person might be barricaded inside.

The officers exited the residence and requested assistance from the department’s emergency negotiation and special response teams. After receiving no response to hours of communication attempts, authorities entered the bedroom later in the evening and found a 40-year-old man dead.

Investigators called in the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death for both individuals. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
