Several suspicious packages were found in Oceanside Sunday, prompting a hazardous materials investigation and a shelter-in-place order for some residents in the neighborhood.
Emergency personnel responded to Castellano Way and Vandegrift Drive at 10:17 a.m. Sunday, where they located multiple suspicious packages requiring further investigation, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.
Vandegrift Boulevard was closed to traffic in the affected area. A shelter-in-place order was issued for specific residents in the 700 block of Arthur Avenue and the 4900 block of El Mirlo Drive.
Oceanside police officers contacted the residents in the affected locations and provided instructions.
“A unified command has been established with the Oceanside Fire Department and Oceanside Police Department, with assistance from San Diego County Environmental Health, San Diego Fire-Rescue Hazmat, Camp Pendleton Hazmat, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Bomb/Arson Unit,” Oceanside Fire Battalion Chief Michael Farnham said. “A safety perimeter has been established around the suspicious packages. Specialized personnel are working to identify and safely dispose of the materials.”
