Police on Tuesday released the name of a 19-year-old man who was shot to death in Grantville four days ago.

The victim, identified as Deandre Towers, from San Diego, died at a local trauma center after Friday’s shooting.

That night, at approximately 10:23 p.m., San Diego police received a 9-1-1 call, informing them of a shooting in the 4500 block of Alvarado Canyon Road outside the Union Grantville apartment complex.

Officers arrived at the scene and located evidence of a shooting, but no victim. But while they were investigating, a separate 9-1-1 caller reported a single-vehicle collision in the 6900 block of Mission Gorge Road.

Officers arrived at the collision scene and discovered Towers in the backseat of the vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The driver, who was not injured, told officers he crashed after leaving the apartments with Towers in tow, trying to get him medical help. Paramedics responded to aid the victim before sending him to the hospital where he died.

Homicide detectives are continuing to try and determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. They believe several individuals witnessed an altercation that preceded it, and are asking for members of the public to step forward and provide information.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting death is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
