The California Highway Patrol will increase patrols statewide for the New Year’s holiday beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday and continuing until 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
“We’re entering a new year, but our message stays the same,” said Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Driving under the influence increases the risks on our roads, raises the chance of a crash, and puts lives in danger.”
He said officers will be watching for signs of alcohol or marijuana impairment as well as reckless driving during the holiday enforcement period.
During last year’s holiday period, the CHP recorded 10 fatal crashes and 481 arrests statewide for suspected driving under the influence.
The agency urged the public to plan ahead: designate a sober driver, use a ride-share service or public transportation, and report drunk drivers by calling 911.
In San Diego, the Metropolitan Transit System will be offering free rides and expanded service on trolley and bus lines after 6 p.m. Wednesday and into the early morning hours on Thursday.
