San Diego County Animal Services has taken custody of a Chihuahua and a Spring Valley woman could face animal abuse charges after a video surfaced reportedly showing her striking and kicking the dog.
According to a Monday release from Animal Services, the video showed the women hitting the “very petite” dog with a wooden plank and covering the animal in a container while being kicked.
On July 21, officials said a concerned citizen recorded a video of the incident in an apartment complex parking lot in Spring Valley. The suspect, who was reportedly living out of her vehicle at the time, was seen allegedly striking the dog. Officers tracked down the unidentified suspect – along with the animal – on Sunday. She agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
“This is a clear example of why community vigilance matters,” Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice said. “We are grateful to the citizen who recorded and reported this incident, allowing us to take swift action to protect this animal.”
Officials said evidence, including the video, was being submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review. Animal Services had also recommended animal cruelty charges against the suspect.
The Chihuahua was impounded and is currently receiving a cruelty exam from county veterinary staff, county officials said. The dog appeared frightened, but medical personnel reported that the animal is doing well and is recovering, they added.
Officials asked anyone who witnesses suspected animal abuse or neglect to report it immediately at (619) 234-2341.
