A wildfire burning through brushy terrain near the eastern edge of Camp Pendleton forced evacuations Monday as ground and airborne crews worked to contain the flames.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 3 p.m. near La Canada Road and state Route 76, west of Interstate 15 in Bonsall, according to Cal Fire.

The flames were soon threatening homes, prompting authorities to issue an evacuation order for neighborhoods north of SR-76, east of South Mission Road and south of Via Monserate.

A temporary shelter for evacuees was in operation at Riverview Church, 4980 Sweetgrass Lane.

No structural damage or injuries were reported.

By shortly before 6 p.m., crews had roughly 10% of the burn area surrounded by firebreaks, according to the state agency. Cal Fire announced at 7:51 p.m. that containment had increased to 50%.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office announced at 7:36 p.m. it had lifted all evacuation orders due to improved containment and all roads that were closed due to the fire have been reopened to traffic.
