San Diego police fatally shot a man early Saturday in Ocean Beach after a pursuit, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in the 4700 block of Bermuda Avenue.

San Diego County Sheriff’s officials said Saturday that officers were sent on a welfare check at about 9:15 a.m. regarding a male adult standing in the middle of the street blocking traffic on the 4400 block of Coronado Avenue.

The male was heard making suicidal statements and a San Diego police officer called for additional units to assist in communicating with the man.

The man fled in a black sedan after officers arrived. During the pursuit, on surface streets in OB, the vehicle crashed into a black Jeep at Bermuda and Ebers Street.

The driver left the car, and, armed with a knife advanced on officers, according to a news release by the Sheriff’s office. Though police used “less lethal options” in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, an officer ended up firing multiple rounds at the suspect, striking him.

Medics took the man to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

No officers were injured, and law enforcement officials have not released the man’s name. The Jeep driver complained of pain, but declined to be transported to the hospital. CBS8 reported that the car that crashed into Jeep was a Mercedes Benz.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s homicide unit are investigating the officer-involved shooting, as per a 2022 memorandum of understanding to help prevent conflicts of interest within departments.
