One person was killed early Tuesday when a car crashed into the back of a U.S. Postal Service semi-truck trailer in Bonsall, causing the vehicle to erupt into flames.

The crash took place at around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 15 near State Route 76, the California Highway Patrol said.

First responders found a heavily damaged sedan that was jammed partially underneath the back of the trailer and heavily engulfed in flames.

Traffic was affected in the area for several hours.

It was unclear what prompted the crash. The driver has not yet been identified.
