A 23-year-old man was killed when his vehicle struck a guardrail and overturned over the weekend in San Diego, law enforcement said Wednesday.

The crash occurred around 5:40 p.m. Saturday, when the driver of a red Toyota was traveling east on the State Route 94 and attempted to transition to the northbound Interstate 15, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle veered off the roadway, became airborne and hit a guardrail on the westbound side of SR-94, where it came to rest overturned, the CHP said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

It was not known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
