
Investigators on Tuesday continued to probe the in-custody death of an auto-theft suspect after she was found unconscious at the county women’s jail in Santee.
Sergeants at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility found the woman, 31, unresponsive in her cell shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
They performed CPR on her prior to the arrival of crews from American Medical Response and the Santee Fire Department, which took over lifesaving efforts, officials said in a news release.
An ambulance took the woman to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead at around 8:15 p.m. Authorities withheld her identity pending family notification.
The cause and manner of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, while the Sheriff’s homicide unit, following protocol, will investigate.
The woman, in custody since Sunday, had faced multiple theft-related charges and resisting an officer,
