Crews on Friday halted the spread of a brush fire that broke out over remote high-desert terrain the day before, blackening dozens of open acres.

The blaze erupted for unknown reasons near the intersection of San Felipe Road and state route 78, east of Julian, according to Cal Fire.

Crews had the burn zone 100% surrounded as of early Friday afternoon, the state agency said.

As of 6:25 a.m., the burn area was estimated at about 50 acres and had not grown in size since Thursday.

Cal Fire officials said they are making progress and will continue to focus on extinguishing hotspots and increasing containment.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
