A request for a welfare check at a Vista home led Wednesday to the discovery of a body and a lengthy sheriff’s standoff that ended with the arrest of a possible suspect.
The seven-hour impasse stretched into the early evening, until at about 5:15 p.m. a male left the home and surrendered without further incident. OnScene.TV reported that his exit followed the deployment of flash bangs and smoke inside the home by a tactical team.
Homicide detectives were then called in to take over the investigation, said Lt. Sean Gallagher of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
It was unclear whether the body was discovered before, during or after the standoff or whether there were any signs of suspicious circumstances related to the death.
According to OnScene.TV, another incident occurred at the same home about two years ago. A suspect allegedly assaulted his mother and dragged her down the street before barricading himself inside.
Deputies went to the residence in the 700 block of North Citrus Avenue shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday to look in on someone at the behest of a concerned caller.
When they arrived, an occupant holed up inside and refused repeated orders to come out, Gallagher said.
After about an hour, sheriff’s officials dispatched SWAT personnel to the neighborhood, the lieutenant said.
The Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team also responded. Officials asked the public on social media to avoid the area if possible.
