A man was shot and killed Tuesday by two San Diego Police Department snipers who fired upon him near Miramar Ranch North.

The shooting occurred roughly an hour after officers were summoned to the area of Angelique Street, north of Cypress Canyon Park Drive, to follow up on reports just after noon of a man who was threatening bystanders with a gun.

The man, described by the San Diego Sheriff’s Office as a 59-year-old white male, allegedly pointed a handgun at construction workers on Angelique, then at a pest-control worker.

That victim, alarmed by the threat, locked himself in the back of his work truck.

Officers arrived and police also sent in a tactical team and Emergency Negotiations Officers, while shutting down traffic lanes in the area.

The authorities, according to a news release by Sheriff’s officials, noticed the suspect holding what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol and ordered him to drop it, but he did not comply.

Once a containment was set up, SWAT officers arrived and attempted to evacuate the pest worker. As they approached the victim, the suspect allegedly pointed his firearm in the direction of officers. At that point, two SWAT snipers fired. The suspect suffered trauma to his upper body and died.

No officers were injured in the incident. A handgun was recovered near the suspect at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s office.

Officials described the snipers as SDPD veterans – one, from Central Division who has been with the department for 17 years, and the other, from Mid-City Division, who has been on the job for 10 years.

Per a 2022 countywide agreement between law enforcement agencies regarding officer-involved shootings, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit was called in to investigate.

The motivation and circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation, authorities said. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330, or after hours at (858) 868-3200.
