A late-morning fire gutted a home, destroyed several cars and blackened about three nearby acres Friday in a neighborhood just east of Camp Pendleton, authorities said.

The non-injury blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 10 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Mission Road and Overland Trail in Fallbrook, according to Cal Fire.

It took less than a half hour for ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters to halt the spread of the flames, said Robert Johnson, a fire captain. He said that firefighters “took advantage of the favorable wind conditions” to control the blaze.

The cause was under investigation. It was not clear whether the flames originated inside or outside the house, Johnson said.
