Several people were detained Wednesday in connection with a shootout in an alley in Southcrest that left a 49-year-old man dead.
The victim, later identified as Manuel Correa, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Based on the facts gathered so far, it appears the victim got into a verbal altercation with a group of people standing in a nearby parking lot,” police said in a statement.
The San Diego Police Department said it found the Lexus some people in the group had fled in at approximately 10:40 a.m. Wednesday. The vehicle was found in the driveway of a home in the 1700 block of 49th Street in the Ridgeview-Webster neighborhood.
Police said they executed a search warrant at the location, detaining several people and impounded the Lexus as evidence.
One suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of firearm and drug offenses. SDPD did not determine whether the suspect was connected to the fatal shooting, and the attack remained under investigation Wednesday evening.
Officers were initially sent to the 3700 block of National Avenue, near 37th Street, on Nov. 27 after receiving reports of a shooting, according to reports.
According to police, Correa and a man from the group both took out handguns and began firing at each other.
It was unclear if the man who fired back also received injuries during the shooting. The motive leading up to the altercation remains under investigation.
