Loved ones of the couple shot to death downtown this week have launched a fundraiser to help their four children and offset funeral expenses.
According to the GoFundMe.com page seeking “Support for (the) Martinez and Medina Children,” the loss of Rachael Martinez and Jose Medina “has left their family shattered, and their children are now left to navigate life without their loving parents.”
The organizers hope to raise $50,000 for the children. Eight donations have been posted thus far.
Martinez, 31, and Medina, 39, were shot in their parked car three blocks north of the San Diego Hall of Justice Wednesday morning. They died at the scene.
The suspected gunman, Christopher Farrell, 26, was the focus of a San Diego police investigation prompted when Martinez accused him last month of domestic abuse, false imprisonment and sex crimes. A temporary restraining order was granted against him three days after her Oct. 4 complaint.
Farrell died in a shootout with Harbor Police in Little Italy shortly after Martinez and Medina were killed. An officer was wounded in the hip during the exchange of gunfire.
San Diego police said a court hearing had been set for Wednesday regarding the restraining order. The victims appeared to be bound for court when they were ambushed in the car.
