A standoff with a domestic violence suspect in San Marcos ended after nearly eleven hours with his arrest Monday.

Detectives with the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s San Marcos station were following up on a domestic violence report in the 2200 block of Flatiron Way at around 10 a.m. Monday when the suspect refused to speak with detectives.

He then threatened to hurt himself and deputies, according to the sheriff’s department.

The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, Crisis Negotiations Team, and Psychiatric Emergency Response Team were all called to assist with the suspect. Deputies said they tried to contact the man, who was identified as Jeremiah Gowdy, 44, several times in an effort to convince him to surrender, but he did not respond.

“Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by contacting the man several times to reach a peaceful resolution, but he did not respond,” said a release from the sheriff’s department. “At around 9:00 p.m., Sheriff’s SED/SWAT used a chemical agent to enter the apartment.”

Gowdy was arrested and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. He will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of felony domestic violence and violating an emergency protective order, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies searched Gowdy’s home and seized rifles and handguns.

His wife and children were provided with domestic violence resources, the sheriff’s department said.
