An off-duty San Diego Community College District police officer fatally shot a man who allegedly stabbed him Wednesday at Fiesta Island, authorities said.
The shooting at the park on Mission Bay was reported shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego police.
Homicide detectives were called in to take charge of the investigation, Sgt. Ariel Savage said.
The campus police officer had just arrived on the island with his dogs when the confrontation took place, Lt. Jud Campbell told reporters.
San Diego police found the officer suffering from stab wounds and the other man shot – he died at the scene.
Paramedics took the officer to a hospital for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening injuries. It is unclear what prompted the confrontation.
The community college responded to the incident with a statement:
“Our focus is on the condition of our officer who sustained serious injuries during an assault this morning at Fiesta Island while he was off duty. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time. The District is cooperating with the San Diego Police Department on the investigation.”
