Motorists were notified Thursday that the El Cajon Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The checkpoint will be in the 1400 block of East Washington from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, the ECPD said in a statement on Thursday.

The main purpose of a checkpoint is to deter drivers from driving impaired, not necessarily to make arrests, the statement said.

Police officers will be checking for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Drivers charged with DUI could face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
