The 16-year-old boy killed in a fiery Clairemont Mesa-area traffic crash that also took the life of a San Diego Police officer and seriously injured a second was identified Wednesday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

Edgar Giovanny Oviedo was driving a BMW at high speed when it collided with a police cruiser and several other vehicles at about 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 5200 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, near Doliva Drive, SDPD Chief Scott Wahl told reporters Tuesday.

The crash sent Officer Zach Martinez, 27, through the windshield of the police vehicle, which then caught fire, OnSceneTV reported. The driver of the cruiser, Officer Austin Machitar, a 30-year-old father of four, died at the scene of the collision. Paramedics took Martinez to a trauma center in critical condition.

Martinez had been a trainee of Machitar and occasionally the two would ride together on patrol shifts, police said.

Oviedo was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the Medical Examiner.

The people in the other cars involved in the pileup were not seriously injured, Wahl said.

The SDPD has turned over the investigation into the fatal crash to the California Highway Patrol “due to the enormity of the situation and all the emotion that’s behind it,” Wahl said.
