A fatal, single-vehicle crash during a police chase closed westbound Route 94 in the Stockton area for almost 10 hours beginning Tuesday night.

The California Highway Patrol reported that a Toyota Prius driver chased by San Diego Police lost control on the transition ramp from Route 15 to Route 94 around 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

A CHP officer at the scene said the male driver of the Prius was take to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officer said there were reports that the Prius may have been involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier.

The freeway was closed for an investigation until 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
