Chula Vista police will have additional officers on patrol through Labor Day looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The extra patrols began Friday. Labor Day is Sept. 2.
The effort is part of a national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
In addition to patrols, the department will hold a DUI checkpoint beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 29, ending at midnight, at an undisclosed location within the city.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 13,524 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2022 — that’s one person every 39 minutes.
Driving while impaired goes beyond intoxication, the department said, reminding drivers that use of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis may also lead to impairment.
