Two men were injured Friday, and one killed, when a car crashed off Interstate 805 in the South Bay, authorities reported.
The northbound Toyota Corolla veered off the freeway north of Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista, struck a concrete pillar and caught fire at about 6:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol
One of the three occupants of the sedan, a 23-year-old Newark resident, died at the scene of the wreck, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.
Paramedics took an Oakland man, 24, who had been driving the car, and a second passenger, 50, to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The cause of the accident was unclear, but intoxication was not believed to be a factor, Castro said.
Initially there were questions over whether the motorist who died was ejected due to the crash or pulled from the Toyota by Good Samaritans.
One witness had reported that someone was still in the vehicle and trapped and that three rescuers were trying to push the vehicle out of the blocked lanes before first responders arrived.
The CHP reported that two right lanes were closed at 7:02 a.m. just north of Telegraph Canyon Road.
The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office said it was on the way to the crash site at 7:11 a.m.
