Firefighters continue their effort Saturday to contain a massive wildfire that has blackened 187 acres in the arid eastern reaches of San Diego County.
The blaze erupted for unknown reasons shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday near Milepost 28 on Great Southern Overland Stage Route in Shelter Valley, in the Agua Caliente area of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, according to an incident report from Cal Fire.
Firefighters remained engaged throughout the night strengthening control lines and extinguishing hot spots, and planned a demobilization of excess resources Saturday as the fire activity has decreased.
“As of Saturday morning firefighters had the spread of the blaze halted at about 187 acres and had the burn area roughly 95% contained. We expect to have the fire wrapped up by this evening,” Cal Fire PIO Michael Cornette told City News Service.
A total of 60 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, including two engines, two hand crews, two water tenders, one dozer and 10 unnamed resources.
Two firefighter injuries and one civilian injury have been reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation, Cal Fire said.
