 A person was hospitalized Friday after a fire on the eighth floor at a residential high-rise building in East Village.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said crews responded at 5:19 a.m. Friday to a structure fire downtown at St. Teresa de Calcutta Villa, located at one 14th Street, in a residence on the eighth floor and they found heavy smoke inside the building. The alarm system was activated.

Residents of a couple of floors were evacuated, SDFRD officials said. The fire was knocked down at 5:32 a.m. and those residents started returning just after 6 a.m.

Crews were released from the scene at 6:34 a.m. after performing ventilation and water removal.

One person was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.
