A kitchen fire spread into the attic of a National City home Saturday causing enough smoke damage to displace a family of four.
The flames started on the oven around 12:20 p.m. according to OnScene.TV. The family was able to escape safely along with their pets.
National City firefighters arrived at the house, in the 1900 block of N Avenue, and quickly put the flames out, but not before there was significant smoke damage.
The American Red Cross has been called in aid the family.
Battalion Chief James Stiles praised the family for evacuating the home and removing their pets in an orderly fashion.
“It’s just a good reminder that if you do have an oven fire, that you want to secure doors as you’re leaving and make sure all your pets and everybody are out before we get there, which these folks did, which made it a lot easier for us,” he said.
