Authorities Monday released the names of two Imperial Beach residents — a woman and a teenage boy — who were killed last week in a fiery South Bay traffic crash on Interstate 5.
Eileen Crawford, 67, was heading north on the southbound side of the freeway when her Honda Civic plowed head-on into an oncoming Dodge Challenger just north of Palomar Street in Chula Vista shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol.
The impact caused the Dodge to burst into flames and left its driver, 16-year-old Thomas Ryder Shoup, and Crawford trapped in their mangled vehicles. Both died at the scene of the accident, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.
It was not immediately clear if intoxication played a role in the wrong-way wreck, Castro said.
Shoup leaves behind a son Marcelo and girlfriend Eliana according to a GoFundMe campaign for the teen’s family.
