Chula Vista police arrested one registered sex offender Thursday morning while conducting an audit of such offenders in the community.
Police detectives, with aid from other law enforcement officials, made the arrest, on an unrelated felony warrant, and will continue to evaluate the status of eight others to determine if they are in compliance with the requirements of state law governing registered sex offenders.
The department will seek arrest warrants for anyone determined to be out of compliance, police said in a news release.
Out of 157 residences visited by law enforcement, 170 compliance checks were completed, with 22 requiring an additional visit. Of those completed, 137 registrants were verified as being in compliance.
California categorizes sex offenders in three tiers based on risk to the public. Tier 1 represents the lowest risk, with tiers 2 and 3 each indicating a higher level of risk. Chula Vista police were able to conduct home visits at listed addresses for all tier 2 and 3 offenders Thursday.
There are almost 260 people registered as sex offenders in Chula Vista, police said.
Agencies providing assistance included the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s Office, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the U.S. Marshals Service.
