Two teens were booked into Juvenile Hall Thursday on suspicion of car theft after they and another teen who got away were involved in a pursuit with El Cajon Police Department officers, authorities said Thursday.

The pursuit began at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday after ECPD received a call about three people who appeared to be breaking into a vehicle and then stealing it, according to Lt. Will Guerin of the ECPD Investigations Division.

Officers found the vehicle and tried to stop it, but it sped away, the lieutenant said. As the vehicle sped away, a handgun was thrown out of the car, which other officers recovered.

After a brief pursuit, the vehicle crashed into a dirt embankment as it exited the freeway and three people ran away from the vehicle, Guerin said. Two of the teens were caught by police and the third suspect was never located despite an extensive search.

The vehicle was stolen out of San Diego, and the teens were also suspected of an earlier theft at Dick’s Sporting Goods, where more than $1,000 in merchandise was taken.
