A man in his 60s was found dead on the left shoulder of southbound Route 163 in Balboa Park and was believed to be the victim of a hit-and-run, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

The man was apparently killed around 11 p.m. Tuesday, when the Patrol received reports of someone walking on the freeway near Interstate 5.

However, officers did not locate a body until approximately 5 a.m. the next morning.

The southbound lanes of Route 163 were closed for an investigation. All traffic was being diverted to Interstate 5.
