A 63-year-old man Monday sustained severe injuries that required surgery when he was struck by a car in Carmel Valley while riding a bicycle.

The crash occurred in the 12300 block of Carmel Creek Road shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego Police Department Officer John Buttle.

A 2023 white Chevrolet Volt driven by a 33-year-old woman was heading northbound on Carmel Creek Road when the driver made an unsafe right turn, striking the bicyclist who was riding in the bike lane, Buttle said.

The man sustained a brain hemorrhage, a lacerated kidney and abrasions all over his body, Buttle said. The victim’s injuries were deemed non-life- threatening.

DUI was not a factor in the crash, Buttle said.

Anyone with information regarding the crash was urged to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
