A 39-year-old motorist from Orange County was killed Thursday in a fiery predawn collision involving a big rig on Interstate 5 near Torrey Pines State Beach.

The Westminster man was heading south at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday when the silver Toyota Tundra pickup truck he was driving rear-ended the tractor-trailer just south of Del Mar Heights Road and began burning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The motorist died at the scene, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said. The victim’s name was withheld pending family notification.

No other injuries were reported.
